Georgina Colwell (LLCM, ISM, RSM)
Georgina was born in Wimbledon and firstly learnt violin, becoming a singer as an adult. She studied at Goldsmiths' College at the University of London, and also with the London College of Music.
She has taken several starring roles in opera including Dido and Tosca, and has sung all the main oratorio roles in this country and in Europe. She has made several recordings; her first CD was for the British Music Society, and another was of her Edinburgh Festival show. She has created and produced several shows, including the story of Ivor Novello and Henry VIII. She has made many specialist recordings for charities, promotions, and of songs that composers have written for her. Her latest CD features a song cycle of the poet and composer Ivor Gurney, which was edited for her by the Ivor Gurney Society. She is a member of the English Poetry and Song Society, the Association of Speakers and Singers, the Association of Teachers of Singing, the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and was recently elected to the Royal Society of Musicians, a great honour. For the 2010-2011 season, she was elected President of the Kingston Madrigal Society, founded in 1905.
After the birth of her two children, she took up teaching and now runs Musicair, her own company specialising in teaching and performing. Georgina teaches singing, piano, violin, and theory in her music studio in Hersham, and is proud that her students have gone on to various music colleges, have taken roles in theatre and opera companies, and become musicians themselves. She is a peripatetic music teacher at Westward Preparatory School in Walton on Thames. Georgina believes in life long learning, and regularly attends seminars and conferences, as well as putting on her own singers' workshops and weekends.
She is the Music Director of the TWIG Singers, a ladies' choir, and has recently formed a Glee Club for ladies who want to learn more about singing and its technique. One of her main hobbies is in amassing a collection of music by English song writers, which will eventually be turned into a trust for study and research.
